Audi driver Nico Hülkenberg has offered insight into his long-standing relationship with Max Verstappen, confirming a mutual respect that spans over two decades. The two drivers first met during their karting careers, where they were part of the same racing team and scene. Hülkenberg noted that their connection dates back 20 to 25 years.

Hülkenberg, who grew up near the Dutch border in Germany, maintains a strong connection with the Netherlands. He has previously worn a special helmet for the Dutch Grand Prix, acknowledging his roots in the country’s racing scene. This bond extends to his friendship with Verstappen.

The German driver expressed admiration for Verstappen’s dedication to racing, encompassing Formula 1, sim racing, and GT categories. Hülkenberg described Verstappen as a ‘passionate racer’ who is ‘fully committed to it, 24/7, lives and breathes it.’ He also highlighted Verstappen’s ‘incredible talent’ and achievements at a young age.

Attention now shifts to the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix, where Red Bull Racing has received clearance to use its controversial ‘Macarena’ rear wing. The FIA has not yet issued a final ruling on the innovative wing concept, despite an ongoing investigation into its safety. This follows incidents in Austria and Great Britain where Verstappen experienced rear wing failures.

During those incidents, the rear wing did not fully close, leading to a sudden loss of downforce. Verstappen described the issue at Silverstone as ‘life-threatening’. The FIA’s current review focuses on the system’s safety rather than any breach of technical regulations. Red Bull is actively working on a solution.

The FIA has confirmed five active aero (SM) zones for the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, the highest number since the 2026 season opener in Australia. This active aero system has replaced the previous DRS mechanism. One SM zone is positioned on the approach to Eau Rouge, though active aero use is prohibited through Eau Rouge/Raidillon itself.

Max Verstappen has voiced concerns regarding energy management at Spa, anticipating a challenging weekend due to the circuit’s demands. His Red Bull teammate, Isack Hadjar, also expects a ‘difficult examination’ for the current generation of cars at Spa-Francorchamps.

Hadjar noted similarities between Spa and Silverstone, where Red Bull encountered difficulties. He does not expect the team to ‘lead the way’ in Belgium and emphasized the need to apply lessons learned from previous races. Hadjar has shown strong form this season, including a top-six finish streak.

In related news, Dries van Langendonck, a 15-year-old Belgian talent, has joined Verstappen Racing. Van Langendonck is also part of the McLaren Driver Development Programme and will receive additional support from Max Verstappen and his management team. He currently leads the 2026 British F4 Championship.

Arvid Lindblad is competing for Racing Bulls in the 2026 Formula 1 season, making him the sole rookie on the grid. Lindblad debuted at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, where he became the third youngest points-scorer in F1 history, finishing eighth.
