The final classification of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix remains subject to an ongoing appeal before the FIA International Court of Appeal. This follows a series of penalties issued during the race, notably impacting George Russell, and a subsequent review that reinstated Pierre Gasly’s podium finish. The outcome of the appeal will determine the definitive results from the Monte Carlo event.
George Russell received a five-second time penalty during the Monaco Grand Prix for speeding in the pit lane. His race was further compromised when he failed to serve this penalty correctly during a subsequent pit stop. This oversight led to the Mercedes driver being issued a drive-through penalty.
Russell was forced to serve the drive-through penalty after a red flag period, which dropped him out of the points-paying positions. He ultimately finished the race in 12th place, failing to score points for the second consecutive Grand Prix. This result also saw him drop to third in the Drivers’ Championship.
In contrast, Kimi Antonelli, Russell’s Mercedes teammate, dominated the Monaco Grand Prix from pole position. Antonelli secured his fifth consecutive victory of the season, extending his lead in the Drivers’ Championship by 66 points. He also achieved the fastest lap of the race.
Pierre Gasly initially crossed the finish line in third place for Alpine. However, he was handed two separate five-second time penalties for speeding in the pit lane on two occasions. These penalties demoted him to seventh position in the provisional classification.
Alpine subsequently filed a right of review regarding Gasly’s penalties. The FIA rescinded both penalties, reinstating Gasly to his original third-place podium finish. This decision prompted further procedural challenges from other teams.
McLaren and Red Bull have since appealed the reinstatement of Gasly’s podium before the FIA International Court of Appeal. The hearing took place in Paris on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
The challenging teams argue that the stewards overstepped their authority by reinstating Gasly, thereby altering the race classification. McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella cited concerns regarding the fairness and integrity of the sport.
The outcome of this appeal could lead to a revised final classification for the Monaco Grand Prix. Drivers such as Isack Hadjar, Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad, who were promoted after Gasly’s initial demotion, could see their positions altered again.
The FIA International Court of Appeal’s decision is expected within two to three weeks from the August 25 hearing. This timeline means the definitive results for the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix are still pending confirmation.
The Monaco Grand Prix was marked by multiple penalties. Sergio Perez received a drive-through penalty for being out of position at the start and a later 10-second time penalty for being out of position at a race restart. Lewis Hamilton also incurred a five-second penalty for pit lane speeding.
The FIA introduced updated Driving Standards and Penalty Guidelines for the 2026 F1 season, granting stewards greater flexibility in imposing sanctions. Penalty points are now primarily applied for dangerous, reckless, or deliberate actions.
