Dutch Formula 1 commentator Olav Mol has voiced concerns regarding the 2026 technical regulations, suggesting a potential inherent problem with the new generation of cars. His comments follow a recent incident involving Charles Leclerc, where the Ferrari driver crashed during a practice session.

Mol drew a direct parallel between Leclerc’s crash and a similar event experienced by Max Verstappen earlier in the current 2026 season. He indicated that the nature of both incidents suggested a common underlying issue related to the car’s behaviour.

Charles Leclerc’s crash occurred on September 5, 2026, during a practice session for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The Ferrari driver lost control at a high-speed corner, resulting in significant damage to his car. Leclerc reported a sudden and unexpected loss of rear grip.

Earlier this year, Max Verstappen encountered a comparable loss of control during the Austrian Grand Prix in July. While Verstappen managed to avoid a full impact, his Red Bull car exhibited similar unpredictable handling characteristics.

The 2026 Formula 1 regulations introduced substantial changes to aerodynamic design, aiming for increased efficiency through active aero elements. These modifications are intended to reduce drag on straights and enhance downforce in corners.

However, several teams and drivers have reported difficulties in achieving a consistent balance with these new aerodynamic packages. The transition between high and low-speed sections of circuits has proven particularly challenging for some.

The FIA is currently monitoring the performance and safety aspects of the 2026 cars. While no official safety alerts have been issued, discussions are ongoing between the governing body and the teams to refine the regulations.

Teams are continuously collecting data to fully comprehend the new aerodynamic concepts and their impact on car stability. Drivers have noted the increased sensitivity of the 2026 cars to external factors like wind conditions and track surface variations.

The operating window for optimal performance has narrowed, demanding precise car setup and driving. This sensitivity makes the cars more susceptible to sudden oversteer or understeer when pushed to their limits or in suboptimal conditions.

The ‘ADUO’ system, likely referring to an Active Drag Reduction System or similar aerodynamic device, is a key component of the 2026 regulations. Its dynamic adjustment capabilities, while designed for efficiency, have presented engineering challenges in maintaining consistent stability.
