A disagreement has emerged between commentators Olav Mol and Renger van der Zande regarding an incident involving Lando Norris in the cooldown room after the Spanish Grand Prix. The two pundits offered contrasting views on the driver’s obligations to sponsors.
The discussion centred on Norris drinking a can of Coca-Cola after the race. An official reportedly took issue with this, as Monster Energy, not Coca-Cola, was a prominent Formula 1 sponsor. Norris was asked to put the can away.
The McLaren driver refused the request, stating he was thirsty after a demanding race and should be able to drink what he wants. This moment in the cooldown room sparked the subsequent debate between the two Dutch analysts.
Olav Mol sided with the driver, arguing that after a race, Norris should be free to choose his own drink. Mol suggested that it is not uncommon for drivers to consume non-sponsored beverages from neutral or branded containers anyway.
Renger van der Zande presented the opposing viewpoint, emphasizing the commercial realities of Formula 1. He stated that Norris should have respected the sponsorship agreements and consumed a beverage from the official partner.
‘He goes to extremes to really squeeze every last bit out of people, technology, and even the shock absorbers’.
According to van der Zande, the situation highlighted a lapse in preparation from the team. He believes McLaren should have provided Norris with his preferred drink in a non-branded bottle to avoid any conflict with race sponsors.
While they disagreed on the driver’s personal responsibility, both Mol and van der Zande concurred that the situation could have been managed better from an organizational standpoint to prevent the public nature of the incident.
This is not the first time Norris’s post-race conduct has caused a stir. He famously broke Max Verstappen’s handmade porcelain trophy at the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix with his champagne celebration. Norris later apologized for that incident.
