Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has stated the team lacks the financial capacity to match the development rate of its Formula 1 rivals during the current 2026 season. This declaration follows a period where Ferrari and McLaren have significantly increased their car upgrade pace.

The comments emerged after the Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort, where Lando Norris secured his second consecutive victory for McLaren. Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished second for Mercedes, with George Russell completing the podium in third.

Mercedes had a dominant start to the 2026 season, winning the first six races. However, Ferrari and McLaren have each claimed two victories in the subsequent six races, demonstrating a shift in competitive momentum.

Wolff explained that Mercedes has not introduced a major car upgrade since the Canadian Grand Prix in May. In contrast, McLaren and Ferrari have consistently brought new parts to most races since then.

The Mercedes boss attributed the situation to the team’s organisational size and infrastructure. He also noted that reliability issues earlier in the season cost Mercedes between 50 and 100 championship points.

Official figures indicate Ferrari has introduced 40 new components to its car since the start of the 2026 season. Red Bull and McLaren have brought 38 new items each, while Mercedes has added 24.

The Formula 1 cost cap for the 2026 season is set at $215 million. This regulation limits team spending on car design, development, manufacturing, and operational costs.

Certain expenditures, such as driver salaries, the wages of the three highest-paid personnel, and marketing costs, remain outside the cost cap. The FIA audits team financial reports to ensure compliance.

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella expressed disbelief regarding Wolff’s claims about Mercedes’ finances. Stella suggested Mercedes possesses ample financial capability.

Stella pointed to allowances in cost-cap reporting related to the 2027 power unit regulations. He believes Mercedes will convert its wind tunnel potential into on-track upgrades.

Wolff, in turn, questioned Ferrari’s aggressive upgrade schedule, suggesting the Italian team might soon exhaust its cost cap allowance. He implied a differing strategy in spending.

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur responded to Wolff’s comments, calling them ‘quite ironic.’ Vasseur highlighted a perceived double standard in how development from different teams is viewed.

‘When Red Bull is developing or when Mercedes is developing they are geniuses; when we are developing we are cheating!’ Vasseur stated.

Vasseur also clarified that Ferrari has not introduced more parts than Red Bull or other teams. He emphasised the strategic advantage of bringing performance upgrades early in the season.

Mercedes currently leads the 2026 Constructors’ Championship with 425 points. Ferrari holds second with 338 points, and McLaren is third with 263 points.

In the Drivers’ Championship, Kimi Antonelli leads with 242 points. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are tied for second, both on 183 points.
