George Russell is set to delay an upcoming power unit change and the associated grid penalty. The Mercedes driver is currently facing a mandatory engine swap during the ongoing 2026 Formula 1 season. This strategic decision aims to align the penalty with the introduction of a significant power unit upgrade from Mercedes’ High Performance Powertrains division.

The delay is specifically intended to prevent Russell from incurring two separate grid penalties. Mercedes plans to introduce its upgraded power unit under the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) system. This system allows for further development given the new 2026 regulations.

Russell’s penalty is anticipated to occur during the Americas triple-header later this season. Reports suggest the United States Grand Prix could be the chosen event for this strategic engine change.

Under the 2026 regulations, drivers are permitted to use four Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) and Turbochargers (TCs) throughout the season. The allowance also includes three Motor Generator Unit-Kinetics (MGU-Ks), Energy Stores (ES), and Control Electronics (CE).

Additionally, four exhaust sets are permitted. The 2026 season introduced a ‘bonus’ allocation of one of each component due to the significant regulatory changes.

Russell has already reached the maximum allowance for several key power unit components. These include his internal combustion engine, turbocharger, energy store, and control electronics.

Taking new components now would immediately trigger grid penalties. A further grid drop would then occur if he were to switch to ADUO-improved parts separately.

His teammate, Kimi Antonelli, already served an engine-related grid penalty at the Italian Grand Prix. Antonelli started 19th at Monza but ultimately secured victory in the race.

Mercedes has faced reliability challenges earlier in the 2026 season. Russell received new Energy Store, Control Electronics, and ancillary components at the Australian Grand Prix as a precautionary measure.

Both Russell and Antonelli have lost significant championship points due to mechanical failures. Russell retired from the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix, while Antonelli suffered a late retirement from second place in Barcelona.

Despite these reliability concerns, Mercedes maintains a strong position in the 2026 championships. The team secured 1-2 finishes in both Australia and China.

Antonelli has also achieved five consecutive victories during the current season. The 2026 power unit regulations represent a major technological shift, emphasizing increased electrical power and sustainable fuels.
