George Russell expressed significant frustration following the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix, openly stating his desire for the same car specifications as teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. This public comment came after a challenging race weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.
Russell’s race ended prematurely on the opening lap after contact with Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari. The incident occurred after Russell experienced a dramatic loss of electrical energy deployment.
He reported being 30-40% down on battery power exiting Turn 1, which left him vulnerable on the Kemmel Straight. Russell described the situation as ‘unacceptable’ over team radio.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the team’s responsibility for Russell’s struggles. Wolff stated that a power unit issue affected all Mercedes engines to varying degrees.
The team’s factory investigation traced the fault to a deeply embedded power unit calibration issue. This software bug caused the car to draw more electrical energy than intended.
This led to the battery depleting earlier than expected, particularly impacting straight-line speed. Russell had reported similar issues at Silverstone earlier in the season.
The problem was evident in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, where Russell qualified fourth, half a second behind pole-sitter Antonelli.
Antonelli went on to win the Belgian Grand Prix, extending his lead over Russell in the Drivers’ Championship to 50 points. Russell now sits third in the standings.
Ahead of the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, Mercedes has implemented software updates to Russell’s power unit. The team is confident the issue has been identified and resolved.
Russell confirmed the discovery of the problem, stating, ‘I’m glad we have found it.’ He accepted his radio messages reflected genuine frustration.
Dutch racing driver Tom Coronel suggested that data indicated Russell’s car was not equipped like Antonelli’s. Wolff, however, reiterated the team’s commitment to equipment parity.
Russell’s 2026 season has included victories in Australia and Austria, but also technical setbacks in Canada and Monaco.
‘It’s one thing after another, after another, after another,’ Russell stated after the Belgian Grand Prix. ‘Not good enough on all regards.’
