Andrea Kimi Antonelli, currently leading the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, has generated significant discussion regarding his pace in comparison to four-time world champion Max Verstappen. The Mercedes driver’s strong performances this season have intensified scrutiny of his raw speed.
Antonelli recently secured pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix, outpacing Verstappen by over three-tenths of a second. This achievement occurred despite Verstappen benefiting from a slipstream from his Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar during qualifying.
Following the Belgian Grand Prix qualifying, Verstappen acknowledged that his Red Bull car could not match Antonelli’s Mercedes in race conditions. He stated that even with a significant tow, the qualifying gap remained substantial.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has expressed satisfaction with the team’s current driver pairing of Antonelli and George Russell. Wolff has dismissed ongoing speculation linking Verstappen to Mercedes for the 2027 season.
Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner suggested that Wolff is ‘too smart’ to pair Verstappen with Antonelli, citing the potential for intense internal competition. Steiner believes Antonelli has established himself as a leading driver.
Jolyon Palmer, a former Formula 1 driver, also warned Mercedes that a Verstappen-Antonelli partnership could be a ‘recipe for disaster.’ Palmer noted Antonelli’s emergence as a championship contender in his second season.
Marco Antonelli, Kimi’s father, commented on the comparisons, stating that while both drivers are fast, Verstappen is a four-time world champion, and Kimi still has a considerable path ahead. He views Verstappen as an example for his son.
Antonelli has already broken several records in his 2026 campaign, including becoming the youngest driver to score three consecutive F1 wins. He also holds a higher pole-to-win conversion rate than Verstappen this season.
Verstappen has faced challenges with the Red Bull RB22 during the current season, describing the car as ‘undriveable’ at the Chinese Grand Prix. He retired from that race due to a power unit issue.
Antonelli’s victory at the Belgian Grand Prix marked his sixth win in ten rounds this season, extending his lead in the Drivers’ Championship. Mercedes has achieved a clean sweep of pole positions this year.
