Mercedes’ decision to promote Andrea Kimi Antonelli directly into its works team is being vindicated by the Italian’s performance in the 2026 season. The 19-year-old currently leads the World Drivers’ Championship during the summer break.
Antonelli has secured six victories in the first eleven races of the campaign. This includes a dominant run of five consecutive wins from the Chinese Grand Prix to the Monaco Grand Prix.
His performance has left the Mercedes management highly satisfied. Deputy team principal Bradley Lord described the young driver’s consistency and calm maturity in only his second season as ‘incredibly impressive’.
Team Principal Toto Wolff has also praised Antonelli’s development, calling his progression the best he has seen from a young driver in a short period. The team’s faith was clear when they signed him to replace the Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton for 2025.
This season’s success stands in stark contrast to his 2025 rookie year, which was marked by inconsistency and a difficult European leg of the calendar. Lord suggests that the challenges of his first year may have accelerated his development, allowing for ‘multiple seasons’ worth of learning in one.
The Italian has established a significant points lead over his teammate George Russell, who had entered the season as the pre-season favourite. Antonelli has frequently outperformed Russell in qualifying, giving him a strategic advantage on Sundays.
Russell has acknowledged his teammate’s talent but has also faced a share of reliability issues and bad luck. The Briton has dismissed any suggestions of internal favouritism toward Antonelli, stating the team’s goal is a Constructors’ Championship.
Antonelli’s surge has been aided by the performance of the Mercedes W17, which has emerged as the class of the field under the new 2026 regulations. The team has won eight of the opening eleven grands prix.
In his sophomore season, Antonelli has already become the sport’s youngest-ever championship leader, youngest polesitter, and the youngest driver to set a fastest lap.
