August 27 marks several significant events in Formula 1 history, including Max Verstappen’s record-equalling achievement and Mario Andretti’s final Grand Prix victory. The day also commemorates the inaugural Canadian Grand Prix as part of the World Championship.
On August 27, 2023, Max Verstappen secured his ninth consecutive Formula 1 victory at the Dutch Grand Prix held at Circuit Zandvoort. This win from pole position saw Verstappen equal Sebastian Vettel’s record for the most consecutive Grand Prix wins.
Vettel established his nine-race winning streak during the 2013 season. Verstappen’s dominant performance at his home race saw Fernando Alonso finish second, with Pierre Gasly completing the podium.
While Vettel and Verstappen are widely recognized for this nine-win record, Alberto Ascari also holds a record for consecutive victories, with seven, though interpretations vary regarding the inclusion of the Indianapolis 500 in his streak.
Forty-five years prior, on August 27, 1978, Mario Andretti claimed his final Formula 1 Grand Prix victory at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort. Driving for Lotus, Andretti finished just 0.320 seconds ahead of his teammate Ronnie Peterson.
This win marked Andretti’s 12th career F1 victory and was a crucial step in his 1978 championship season. The Lotus one-two finish also secured the 1978 Constructors’ Championship for the team with three races remaining in the season.
Andretti’s triumph remains the most recent Formula 1 victory achieved by an American driver.
Further back in history, August 27, 1967, hosted the first Canadian Grand Prix to be included in the Formula 1 World Championship. The race took place at Mosport International Raceway in Ontario.
Jack Brabham won the event for his own Brabham team, with teammate Denny Hulme finishing second. Dan Gurney secured third place.
This result was instrumental in securing the 1967 Constructors’ Championship for Brabham, with three races still remaining in the season. Jim Clark also set a new record during qualifying, achieving his 30th career pole position.
