Four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen is set to participate in a unique karting event, ‘Max vs 100’, at Silverstone on September 16, 2026. This special race will see Verstappen return to his karting roots for a direct challenge against a large field of competitors.
The event’s format dictates that Verstappen will start from the back of a 100-driver grid. His objective is to overtake every single competitor during the race. Red Bull has described this challenge as one of the biggest go-kart races ever staged.
Verstappen’s karting background is extensive and highly successful. He began racing karts at the age of four and quickly progressed through various championships. His career in karting culminated in a record-breaking 2013 season.
During that year, he secured the CIK-FIA KZ World Championship at Varennes-sur-Allier, France. This achievement established him as the youngest-ever driver to win the gearbox World Championship, beating future rival Charles Leclerc.
Verstappen has commented on his return to karting, stating that it provides fundamental racing education. He noted that go-karts teach the basics of starts, defending, and overtaking, making it a valuable discipline.
‘In go-karts you learn all the basics: starts, defending, overtaking. Of course, I spent a long period of my life go-karting, so it’s always nice to return,’ Verstappen said.
The ‘Max vs 100’ event will take place on a purpose-built circuit at Silverstone. The track design for this specific challenge was overseen by Race Director David Terrien, a respected figure in karting.
Global broadcast coverage for the event is confirmed. The race will be streamed live on Disney+ worldwide. Viewers in the United States will also have access to a live broadcast via the ESPN App, with a delayed showing on ESPN2.
The field of 100 challengers will comprise a diverse group. This includes various Red Bull athletes, celebrities, content creators, and personalities from around the world.
This karting participation adds to Verstappen’s already full 2026 Formula 1 calendar, which features 24 races. The ‘Max vs 100’ event is scheduled between Grand Prix weekends, allowing for his involvement.
