Max Verstappen has voiced his frustration regarding the ongoing discussions surrounding Formula 1’s 2026 power unit regulations. The Red Bull driver stated he is ‘a bit tired of repeating himself’ when questioned about the impact of the new rules on driving dynamics and car performance. This sentiment emerged during media engagements ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Verstappen has been a consistent critic of the 2026 technical regulations since their introduction, particularly the shift to a 50:50 split between internal combustion and electrical power. He previously described the new cars as ‘Formula E on steroids’ during pre-season testing earlier this year.
The removal of the MGU-H and the increased power of the MGU-K to 350kW have significantly altered energy management strategies. Drivers are now forced into ‘lift-and-coast’ techniques and ‘super clipping,’ which affects throttle application and cornering lines.
Verstappen argues that these changes make the driving experience unnatural and can penalise faster drivers. He noted that gaining time in a corner can paradoxically lead to losing speed on the subsequent straight, a scenario he believes is contrary to traditional racing principles.
His criticisms, initially dismissed by some as ‘complaining,’ are now being echoed by an increasing number of drivers. Oscar Piastri recently labelled the self-learning algorithms of the 2026 power units as ‘crap,’ highlighting how minor driver inputs can unpredictably affect energy management later in a lap.
Following the Belgian Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton also expressed concerns. Sainz admitted the current cars diminished the enjoyment of a qualifying lap at Spa, while Hamilton questioned the approval process for the original simulations.
Sergio Pérez further commented that Spa-Francorchamps, with its long straights, is ‘not a good place for F1’ under the current regulations, citing issues with battery depletion and forced energy management.
The FIA has acknowledged driver feedback, with Single-Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis stating the governing body is ‘fully open’ to addressing concerns. While positive feedback was received on reduced weight and smaller dimensions, energy management remains under evaluation.
Minor regulatory adjustments were implemented for the Miami Grand Prix earlier this season, and further changes to the power units are confirmed for the 2027 campaign. These aim to improve safety and reduce excessive harvesting.
Despite the regulatory challenges, Verstappen maintains that Red Bull Racing is on an ‘upward trend.’ The team has faced a difficult 2026 season, currently positioned behind Mercedes and McLaren in the constructors’ championship due to performance struggles and reliability issues.
The Hungaroring, with its low-speed corners and emphasis on traction, is anticipated to suit Red Bull’s strong internal combustion engine, potentially mitigating some of the battery deployment issues seen at power-sensitive circuits. Red Bull has yet to secure a victory this season.
Regarding his future, Verstappen formally confirmed his commitment to Red Bull for the 2026 season, ending speculation linking him to Mercedes. His contract extends until 2028, though it includes performance-related exit clauses for 2027.
Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, has indicated that the driver intends to fulfil his contract until 2028. Verstappen himself has been non-committal on his long-term plans beyond 2028, stating he needs to decide if he wishes to continue in Formula 1 for an extended period.
