Max Verstappen officially extended his contract with Red Bull Racing on August 20, 2026, securing his position with the team until the conclusion of the 2030 Formula 1 season. This announcement concluded nearly 18 months of intense speculation surrounding the four-time world champion’s future.
Verstappen’s previous agreement was set to expire at the end of the 2028 season. However, it contained performance-based exit clauses that could have allowed him to depart earlier.
For the current 2026 season, reports from Sky Sports F1 indicated that the contractual threshold for an early exit was finishing outside the top two in the Drivers’ Championship before the summer break.
Prior to the extension, Verstappen had been linked with potential moves to other prominent teams. Mercedes held serious conversations with his management in 2025, while McLaren was also a strong contender in 2026.
Despite Red Bull’s challenges with the new 2026 technical regulations, Verstappen expressed his commitment. He stated he never felt the desire or need to switch teams to pursue victories elsewhere.
Verstappen further commented that he was closer to considering retirement from Formula 1 than changing teams. This sentiment stemmed from his dissatisfaction with certain aspects of the new regulations.
Red Bull Team Principal Laurent Mekies lauded the contract extension, calling it ‘fantastic news for everyone at Red Bull’. He highlighted the importance of retaining ‘the best driver on the grid’.
‘Having Max continue with us and retaining the best driver on the grid is fantastic news for everyone at Red Bull, Oracle Red Bull Racing, as well as F1 and motorsport as a whole,’ Mekies stated.
Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, acknowledged that the decision to extend was not straightforward. He noted his son’s comfort within the Red Bull environment.
Mekies, who was promoted to Team Principal in July 2025, was credited by Jos Verstappen for his positive influence in the negotiations. His open communication was cited as a crucial factor.
The contract extension ensures stability for Red Bull as they navigate the current regulatory period and prepare for future seasons. Verstappen’s commitment underscores his belief in the team’s long-term vision.
