Reports indicate growing tension between Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s current leadership. This development contrasts sharply with the late Dietrich Mateschitz’s historical, unwavering belief in the Dutch driver. The situation highlights a shift in dynamics within the team’s upper echelons.

Dutch media outlets have detailed increasing frustration among Red Bull shareholders, including Mark Mateschitz, regarding Verstappen’s delayed commitment to his future. This reluctance is reportedly being interpreted as a lack of loyalty by some within the organisation. The uncertainty has intensified following recent race weekends.

Verstappen has openly expressed dissatisfaction with the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, describing the new cars as ‘not a lot of fun to drive’ and akin to ‘Formula E on steroids’. He has also indicated an interest in exploring other motorsport ventures outside of F1. His contract includes an exit clause after the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Dietrich Mateschitz, the co-founder of Red Bull, consistently demonstrated profound support for Verstappen from the earliest stages of his career. Mateschitz famously stated his ‘ultimate dream’ was for Verstappen to become the youngest world champion with Red Bull. He viewed Verstappen as a unique and strong personality.

Verstappen himself revealed in March 2026 a personal vow made to Dietrich Mateschitz to spend his entire Formula 1 career with Red Bull. This commitment represented a shared dream between the driver and the late founder.

Former F1 driver David Coulthard, in May 2026, recalled Mateschitz’s ethos of allowing Verstappen to ‘be himself’ when he first joined the team. This philosophy fostered an environment of freedom for the driver.

The current reported impatience from Red Bull’s ownership presents a notable divergence from Dietrich Mateschitz’s long-standing approach. His absolute conviction in Verstappen’s abilities and loyalty was a cornerstone of their relationship.

Christian Horner, former Red Bull Team Principal, is scheduled to release a memoir in October 2026. This publication is expected to offer further insights into the team’s history and Dietrich Mateschitz’s vision for Red Bull Racing.

The ongoing contractual discussions and Verstappen’s public comments create a period of uncertainty for Red Bull. The team is also navigating significant power unit regulation changes for the 2026 season.
