Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has recently provided further insight into Lewis Hamilton’s reaction following the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Wolff stated in late August 2026 that both he and Hamilton have now made ‘peace’ with the outcome of the championship decider.

Despite this acceptance, Wolff also indicated in December 2025 that the events of that race remain a daily thought for both him and Hamilton. The pain from the 2021 season finale ‘still sticks’ with the team.

Wolff recounted that Hamilton was in a state of ‘disbelief’ and ‘shock’ immediately after the race. Hamilton subsequently withdrew from public view, seeking time to process the outcome.

The Mercedes boss noted Hamilton’s immediate departure to the Caribbean, where he engaged in sports like kite surfing. Wolff viewed this as a sign that Hamilton was ‘okay’ and coping with the immense disappointment.

Wolff expressed pride in Hamilton’s ability to navigate such a difficult period, highlighting the driver’s significant growth in managing adversity. This resilience strengthened their relationship.

Hamilton himself addressed the situation in April 2024, stating he felt ‘obviously robbed’ of the title. He found solace in the presence of his father, Anthony, during that challenging time.

In September 2025, Hamilton reflected on the lasting impact, describing such memories as ‘scars’ that are carried for life. However, he also affirmed that he is ‘at peace’ with the outcome.

James Vowles, former Mercedes strategist and current Williams Team Principal, also commented on Hamilton’s response in April 2026. Vowles praised Hamilton’s composed leadership within the team during the aftermath.

Mercedes initially lodged protests and an intention to appeal the race result, but later withdrew them. The team cited ‘sporting fairness’ as the reason, seeking clarity for future regulations.

The FIA subsequently launched an investigation into the events of Abu Dhabi 2021. This led to significant changes in race control procedures and the removal of Michael Masi as Race Director.
