Lewis Hamilton finished sixth at the Singapore Grand Prix, dropping three positions from his starting grid slot of third. The Ferrari driver’s race outcome was significantly impacted by a strategic decision during a Virtual Safety Car period. Max Verstappen secured victory for Red Bull, marking his first win at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Hamilton’s decline from a potential podium position stemmed from his choice to disregard a Ferrari pit wall instruction. The team had called for him to pit under a Virtual Safety Car on lap 39, a move his teammate Charles Leclerc successfully executed.
Remaining on track committed Hamilton to a demanding 23-lap stint on a single set of soft tyres. This extended run on degraded rubber left him vulnerable in the closing stages of the 62-lap race, ultimately costing him valuable track position.
Several rivals capitalized on Hamilton’s compromised tyre strategy. Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes, along with McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, successfully overtook the Ferrari in the final laps. Antonelli secured third, Norris fourth, and Piastri fifth.
Following the chequered flag, Hamilton conveyed an apology to his team over the radio. He acknowledged the strategic misjudgment, stating, ‘Sorry, boys. I let you down today with that strategy. My call, and I lost us valuable points.’
A post-race statement from Ferrari included further comments from Hamilton. He explained his initial decision to start on medium tyres, aiming for a one-stop strategy, but noted the medium compound did not perform as anticipated.
Hamilton also clarified his missed pit entry under the VSC, after which he opted to remain out. Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur confirmed that Hamilton had overridden the team’s call to pit, expressing disappointment over the lost podium opportunity.
The Singapore Grand Prix is renowned as one of the most physically demanding events on the Formula 1 calendar. The Marina Bay Street Circuit, with its intense heat and high humidity, pushes drivers to their limits, often resulting in significant weight loss during the race.
The 4.927-kilometre circuit features 19 corners, tight run-off areas, and unforgiving barriers. This layout, combined with the high probability of safety car deployments, makes strategic decisions particularly critical for race outcomes.
Max Verstappen’s victory was his second consecutive win this season, following success in Malaysia. Kimi Antonelli’s third-place finish further extended his lead in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
