According to Sky Sports analyst Ted Kravitz, Mercedes’ perception of the driver market has shifted, with Max Verstappen no longer considered the sole top-tier driver in Formula 1. The team’s long-standing interest in the four-time world champion appears to have cooled significantly.
This change in perspective is reportedly influenced by the strong performances of other drivers on the grid. The likes of Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, and Oscar Piastri are now viewed by Mercedes as being in the same elite category as Verstappen, broadening the team’s future options.
Previously, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff had openly courted Verstappen, admitting to holding talks with the Dutchman’s camp. This interest was particularly prominent during periods of uncertainty at Red Bull and ahead of the 2026 regulation changes.
However, Wolff has recently confirmed his intention to retain the team’s current driver lineup of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli for the 2027 season. Speaking at the Austrian Grand Prix, Wolff stated, ‘We don’t want to change things… it’s a line-up that is good for us.’
This effectively closes the door on a potential move for Verstappen to the Brackley-based team. The decision solidifies the futures of Russell, who holds a multi-year deal, and rookie sensation Antonelli, who currently leads the drivers’ championship.
Antonelli’s rapid development and success this season have seemingly convinced Mercedes that they have a future champion within their own ranks, reducing the urgency to pursue an external superstar like Verstappen. Wolff has expressed that the young Italian is exceeding their ‘wildest expectations’.
Meanwhile, Verstappen’s own future remains a topic of discussion. His Red Bull contract runs until the end of 2028, but it contains performance-related exit clauses. Frustration with Red Bull’s inconsistent performance has fueled speculation about a potential early departure.
Verstappen has been non-committal when questioned about his plans beyond the current season, stating there is ‘nothing to say’ regarding his future. Recent reports have linked him more strongly with a potential move to McLaren, though these remain unconfirmed.
