Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack has drawn a comparison between Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen, highlighting their shared drive for challenges beyond Formula 1. Krack stated that Alonso’s continued interest in other motorsport disciplines, even after extending his F1 contract, mirrors Verstappen’s diverse racing pursuits.

Alonso, who signed a new deal with Aston Martin for the 2027 season in late September, remains keen on exploring events such as the Dakar Rally. This ambition, according to Krack, is a defining characteristic of the two-time world champion.

Krack noted that Alonso exhibits an immediate response to opportunities, a trait evident during team debriefs and performance discussions. He described Alonso as a driver who does not let a chance pass when it presents itself.

The Aston Martin team principal sees this mindset as a key factor in Alonso’s enduring competitiveness. Max Verstappen, similarly, combines his Formula 1 commitments with an extensive GT3 racing programme.

Aston Martin has experienced a challenging 2026 season, but recently achieved its best result at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. Fernando Alonso secured an eighth-place finish, more than doubling the team’s points tally for the year.

Prior to this, Alonso had scored points in Monaco and the Netherlands. The team’s AMR26, driven by Alonso and Lance Stroll, has seen development throughout the season.

Honda introduced ADUO upgrades to the power unit, focusing on the turbocharger, which contributed to improved drivability. This was particularly beneficial in the wet conditions experienced during the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen, meanwhile, secured his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Bahrain Grand Prix. This marked his eighth podium finish of the current campaign.

Verstappen’s win in Malaysia demonstrated Red Bull Racing’s renewed competitiveness. He is currently behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli in the standings.

Krack’s observations underscore a shared intensity and dedication to racing that transcends single-discipline focus in both Alonso and Verstappen.
