Haas F1 Team Principal Ayao Komatsu has provided a candid assessment of the team’s financial situation, indicating that budget cap limitations are hindering their ability to compete at the front of the Formula 1 grid. The American-licensed outfit, now known as TGR Haas F1 Team, faces significant resource disparities compared to its rivals.

Komatsu stated that Haas is currently struggling to meet the $215 million F1 cost cap for the 2026 season. This financial constraint places the team at a distinct disadvantage in the ongoing development race.

The team principal highlighted that Haas operates with approximately 400 employees, a significantly smaller workforce than many competitors. This reduced headcount impacts their capacity for in-season car development.

Komatsu described the situation as ‘fighting with both hands tied behind their back,’ emphasizing the unfair burden on his staff. He is prioritising securing the necessary funding to operate at the budget cap.

The 2026 season began with promising results for Haas, particularly through Oliver Bearman. The young Briton secured a seventh-place finish in Melbourne and a fifth in Shanghai during the early races.

Bearman’s strong performances, including a fourth-place finish in Mexico during the 2025 season, initially propelled Haas to fourth in the Constructors’ Championship after two rounds this year.

However, the team’s form has since declined. Haas has not scored any points in the five races leading up to the summer break, falling to seventh in the standings by early August 2026.

Esteban Ocon, Bearman’s teammate, also contributed to the points tally earlier this season with a tenth-place finish in Japan and two points in Monaco.

Komatsu acknowledged that the team has been ‘out-spent and out-developed by its rivals.’ This has led to a scarcity of point-scoring opportunities in recent Grand Prix events.

Haas made its Formula 1 debut in 2016, becoming the first American-led team in three decades. They notably scored points in their inaugural race in Australia and achieved their best Constructors’ Championship finish of fifth in 2018.

Despite flashes of potential throughout its history, Haas remains one of four teams on the current grid yet to secure a race victory.

The long-standing partnership with Ferrari for technical components, including engines and gearboxes, has been fundamental to Haas’s operation since its inception.

Komatsu, who took over as Team Principal in January 2024, has focused on improving internal communication and fostering a ‘no blame culture’ within the team.

He aims to provide his team with the necessary resources to fully demonstrate their capabilities. The current financial limitations present a significant hurdle to achieving this objective and challenging for frontrunner status.
