Kimi Antonelli, the current leader of the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, has highlighted Mercedes teammate George Russell as a significant rival in the ongoing title battle. Antonelli enters his home race, the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, with a substantial points advantage.

The Italian driver holds 242 points, establishing a 59-point lead over both Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who are tied on 183 points each. This places Russell as Antonelli’s closest challenger within the Mercedes team.

Antonelli is set to start the Italian Grand Prix from the back of the grid due to a planned power unit change. This strategic decision by Mercedes aims to manage his engine component allocation for the remainder of the season.

Despite the grid penalty, Antonelli views the situation as an opportunity. He stated that starting further back helps to alleviate some of the pressure associated with racing at his home circuit.

Speaking on Thursday ahead of the Monza event, Antonelli confirmed discussions with the team regarding a potential strategic role in qualifying. He indicated a willingness to provide Russell with a tow if requested by Mercedes.

‘It has been discussed with the team, and yes, we have agreed on a few things,’ Antonelli stated. ‘Obviously I am not fighting for [pole] so if I can do anything to help the team, I will do it.’

Antonelli acknowledged Russell’s strong performance this season. He noted that he actively analyses Russell’s data to improve his own driving.

The 20-year-old driver expressed his ambition to surpass Russell’s performance, while recognising the challenge. He described Russell as a ‘very, very strong’ competitor.

The Italian Grand Prix at Monza marks the 13th round of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The circuit is known for its high-speed characteristics and significant full-throttle sections.

Under the current 2026 regulations, Monza presents unique energy harvesting challenges. However, the track’s layout is also expected to offer numerous overtaking opportunities.

Beyond the Mercedes internal battle, Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), Lando Norris (McLaren), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) remain in contention for the championship.

Antonelli’s current lead positions him as Italy’s strongest hope to end a 60-year drought for a home winner at Monza. Ludovico Scarfiotti was the last Italian to win the event in 1966.
