Andrea Kimi Antonelli currently leads the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship. The Mercedes driver secured his sixth victory of the season at the recent Belgian Grand Prix. This result further solidified his position at the top of the standings.
Antonelli, aged 19, made his Formula 1 debut with Mercedes in the 2025 season. He replaced Lewis Hamilton, who moved to Ferrari. Antonelli has been a part of the Mercedes Junior Programme since 2019.
His 2026 season has been marked by significant performance. Antonelli holds records as the youngest driver to lead a lap and to score a grand chelem. He also became the youngest World Drivers’ Championship leader.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has confirmed the team will not implement orders. This decision stands despite Antonelli’s growing championship advantage over teammate George Russell. Mercedes prioritises maximising points for the constructors’ championship.
Antonelli is contracted to Mercedes until at least the end of the 2026 season. Reports indicate his contract may extend to 2029, with potential renegotiations. Mercedes aims to retain both Antonelli and Russell for the 2027 season.
His rapid ascent through the junior ranks saw him skip Formula 3. He moved directly from Formula Regional to Formula 2 in 2024. This progression highlighted the confidence Mercedes placed in his talent.
Earlier this year, Antonelli demonstrated strong form during 2026 pre-season testing in Bahrain. He topped the timesheets on multiple days, showcasing the W17’s potential. This performance set expectations for his current season.
His junior career includes multiple titles. Antonelli won both the Italian and ADAC F4 championships in 2022. He followed this with victories in the Formula Regional European and Middle East categories in 2023.
