Juan Pablo Montoya has revised his outlook on Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 future, now anticipating the British driver will continue racing for Ferrari for several more seasons. This assessment marks a shift from earlier speculation regarding Hamilton’s potential retirement.
Hamilton is currently in his second year with Ferrari, having joined the team for the 2025 season. His contract with the Scuderia extends through the 2027 season, with reports indicating a further option for 2028.
Montoya had previously suggested that Hamilton might conclude his illustrious career after the 2026 season. This earlier stance followed a challenging 2025 campaign, which was Hamilton’s debut year with the Maranello outfit.
However, Hamilton’s performance during the current 2026 season has prompted Montoya to alter his prediction. The seven-time world champion has demonstrated a significant resurgence in form.
Montoya now believes that Hamilton is unlikely to retire if Ferrari maintains its competitive performance and Hamilton continues to deliver strong results. He stated that Hamilton could remain with Ferrari for another two or three years.
Hamilton currently holds second position in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship standings, trailing Kimi Antonelli by 50 points. He secured his inaugural victory with Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix in June.
His improved confidence and consistent results this year have effectively moved the conversation away from any immediate retirement plans. This sustained performance is a key factor in Montoya’s revised view.
An extended tenure for Hamilton at Ferrari could impact the progression of the team’s young driver development programme. Talents such as Oliver Bearman and Rafael Camara may face a longer wait for a Ferrari seat.
Oliver Bearman, a Ferrari Driver Academy product, is currently on loan at Haas. He is considered a long-term prospect for Ferrari, with discussions about his potential move to the main team likely focusing on 2028.
Ferrari is reportedly in discussions with Cadillac regarding a loan arrangement for Rafael Camara for the 2027 Formula 1 season. This move aims to secure Camara a place on the grid while maintaining his connection to the Scuderia.
The current Ferrari driver lineup consists of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Leclerc signed a multi-year agreement with Ferrari that extends beyond the 2028 season.
