Jonathan Wheatley, former Audi F1 team principal, was observed in the Formula 1 paddock at the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend, marking his first public appearance since his departure from Audi in March 2026. This sighting intensifies ongoing speculation regarding his potential appointment as Aston Martin’s new team principal.

Wheatley’s exit from Audi (then Sauber) occurred in March 2026, just 48 hours after reports emerged identifying him as the primary candidate for Aston Martin’s long-term team principal role. Audi cited ‘personal reasons’ for his departure, though reports suggested a desire to return to the UK and potential disagreements with Audi F1 boss Mattia Binotto.

He had assumed his first senior management position with Audi in 2025, following an extensive tenure as Red Bull’s sporting director. Wheatley had spent nearly two decades at Red Bull, playing a significant role in the team’s championship successes.

The current Aston Martin team principal is Adrian Newey, who took on the role in November 2025, succeeding Andy Cowell. Newey, a renowned designer, has publicly stated that the responsibilities of team principal have been a distraction from his core focus on car design and development.

Newey, who will turn 68 in December 2026, joined Aston Martin as Managing Technical Partner in March 2025, ahead of the 2026 regulations. His appointment as team principal was reportedly a temporary arrangement to fill a leadership gap.

The search for a new team boss at Aston Martin was reportedly led by Newey himself, with Wheatley emerging as the preferred candidate. This move would allow Newey to revert to a purely technical role, maximizing his expertise in car development.

During his paddock appearance at Circuit Zandvoort, Wheatley was photographed entering the Alpine hospitality unit. This visit was understood to be a personal one, to meet his friend and former Benetton/Renault colleague, Steve Nielsen.

Steve Nielsen returned to Alpine as managing director in September 2025, overseeing the day-to-day operations at the Enstone factory. Nielsen and Wheatley share a history, having worked together during the Benetton and Renault eras.

The Dutch Grand Prix, held from August 21-23, 2026, was the twelfth round of the current Formula 1 season and featured a sprint format. It marked the final scheduled running of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort before its departure from the F1 calendar.

Aston Martin has experienced a challenging 2026 season, with reliability issues and a lack of pace, particularly with their new Honda power unit. The team introduced a significant upgrade package at the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this season.

While no official announcement has been made by Aston Martin regarding Wheatley’s appointment, the paddock presence suggests a move is imminent. Any such transition would likely involve a period of gardening leave, unless a financial agreement is reached to expedite his start.
