Former Ferrari driver Jean Alesi has criticised Lewis Hamilton’s comments regarding the team’s strategy during and after the recent Dutch Grand Prix. Alesi stated that Hamilton’s complaints were ‘misplaced’ and ‘out of line’ following the race at Zandvoort.

Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, expressed significant frustration over what he perceived as flawed and hesitant strategic decisions. He believed these decisions ultimately cost him a podium finish in the Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion was particularly disappointed that his teammate, Charles Leclerc, did not immediately yield position. Hamilton felt he had superior pace on fresher tyres at that stage of the race.

Hamilton finished the Dutch Grand Prix in fourth position, directly behind George Russell of Mercedes. Charles Leclerc crossed the line in fifth place.

Alesi, who competed for Ferrari for five seasons between 1991 and 1995, shared his perspective in his weekly column for the Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

The 62-year-old emphasised that ‘Ferrari is Ferrari’ and ‘deserves respect,’ even when the team does not immediately accommodate a driver’s request.

Alesi acknowledged Hamilton’s considerable personality and value to the team. However, he suggested that Hamilton’s approach can sometimes create hesitation within the Scuderia.

He also indicated that Leclerc’s delay in moving aside was not solely responsible for Hamilton missing a podium position.

Following his initial remarks, Hamilton took to social media on Monday, August 24, 2026, to reflect on his conduct. He admitted that his radio and television comments did not represent ‘the best version of me.’

Hamilton accepted responsibility for his statements, which he attributed to frustration in the heat of the moment. He affirmed his deep care for the team and its ongoing project.

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur later explained the strategic decisions. He noted the team’s intention to avoid revealing plans over the radio to rivals.

Vasseur also conceded that the execution of Ferrari’s strategy during the Dutch Grand Prix had not been optimal.
