Red Bull Racing heads to the Hungaroring this week, aiming for their inaugural victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The team arrives in Budapest with renewed confidence following a podium finish at the Belgian Grand Prix. Max Verstappen secured third place at Spa-Francorchamps, with teammate Isack Hadjar finishing sixth.
The Hungarian Grand Prix circuit presents a stark contrast to the high-speed demands of Spa. The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps rewards outright power, aerodynamic efficiency, and sustained energy deployment. The Hungaroring, conversely, is a tight, technical, and relentless track.
Often likened to ‘Monaco without walls’, the Hungaroring features short straights and a series of predominantly slow corners. This layout places a significant premium on mechanical grip, downforce at lower speeds, and precise driver input. Overtaking is notoriously difficult, making a strong qualifying performance crucial for race success.
The 2026 Formula 1 regulations introduced new power units with a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power. This represents a substantial shift from previous seasons, with the complex MGU-H component removed.
Drivers are now required to manage energy deployment throughout a lap, as cars can become vulnerable when their batteries deplete. Max Verstappen has openly criticised these new regulations, describing the cars as ‘anti-racing’ and feeling like ‘Formula E on steroids’ due to the emphasis on energy management.
Red Bull’s internal combustion engine is reportedly among the strongest on the grid. The low-speed nature of the Hungaroring could therefore reduce the reliance on prolonged electrical deployment, potentially mitigating some of the team’s power unit weaknesses.
This characteristic of the circuit might allow Red Bull to exploit their mechanical grip more effectively, making their car considerably more competitive. Verstappen expressed encouragement after his Belgian Grand Prix performance, which marked his 130th podium with the team.
The team has been working on improving their low-speed performance, with Team Principal Christian Horner expressing cautious optimism for the upcoming race. He suggested the circuit’s demands might mask some of the RB22’s high-speed deficiencies.
Key competitors for Red Bull at the Hungaroring include Mercedes and Ferrari, both of whom have shown strong form on technical circuits this season. Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes secured victory at the Belgian Grand Prix, with Charles Leclerc of Ferrari finishing second.
Red Bull is also navigating a period of significant staff turnover, including the departure of Adrian Newey. Verstappen has urged the team to ‘find new talent’ and ‘carry on’ amidst these changes.
