Christian Horner has addressed recent speculation linking him with a return to Formula 1 as Ferrari team principal, clarifying his position on any potential comeback. Horner stated that his previous comments regarding Ferrari being a ‘dream job’ were taken out of context.
The former Red Bull team principal maintains that any future involvement in Formula 1 would necessitate an ownership stake in a team. This condition, he noted, effectively rules out a move to Ferrari, as the Italian outfit does not offer such an arrangement.
Horner’s remarks to The Times had initially fueled speculation about his interest in the Maranello role, particularly amid ongoing scrutiny of current Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur.
Ferrari has publicly affirmed its full confidence in Vasseur, with both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc also expressing their support for the Frenchman’s leadership.
Vasseur has faced considerable pressure during the 2026 season, largely from the Italian media, due to Ferrari’s performance. The SF-26 car has exhibited a power unit deficit, and its cornering advantage has diminished over recent rounds.
This performance context has led to increased scrutiny, with sources indicating Vasseur could be eased out of his role by the end of the current F1 season.
Horner was dismissed from Red Bull in July 2025, ending a two-decade tenure that saw the team secure six constructors’ and eight drivers’ championships.
His departure followed the 2025 British Grand Prix, with Red Bull GmbH confirming the decision on July 9, 2025.
Horner believes his exit was linked to a corporate shift within Red Bull following the death of co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz in 2022, suggesting a feeling that he held ‘too much control.’
He received a substantial severance package, reported to be around $150 million, including salary and pension payments from Red Bull in 2025.
Horner has indicated he feels no urgency to return to Formula 1 and is content to assess opportunities over the coming months or years. He stressed that a comeback is not a prerequisite, and he would only return for the right opportunity with like-minded individuals focused on winning.
