A shared challenge is emerging for several prominent Formula 1 drivers, with Oscar Piastri, George Russell, Isack Hadjar, and Charles Leclerc reportedly navigating similar pressures within their respective teams. Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert has highlighted this dynamic, particularly in the context of the ongoing 2026 season and its new technical regulations.

Herbert suggests these drivers are experiencing what he terms ‘No. 2 pressure,’ a situation where they are strong competitors but potentially overshadowed or playing a supporting role to a teammate. This inherent pressure is a constant in Formula 1, amplified by the significant regulatory overhaul introduced this year.

The 2026 Formula 1 season brought substantial changes to power units, chassis, and aerodynamics. Power units now feature a 50-50 split between the internal combustion engine and battery, tripling the emphasis on electrical energy. Cars are also smaller, lighter, and more nimble.

New active aerodynamic systems, including ‘Overtake Mode’ replacing DRS, are in effect. These changes aim to improve racing, but drivers have voiced concerns regarding overtaking difficulties and complex battery management. Max Verstappen notably described the new racing as ‘like Mario Kart’ earlier this season.

Oscar Piastri, driving for McLaren, is contracted until at least the end of the 2028 season, following extensions in September 2023 and March 2025. Despite his long-term commitment, Piastri has faced recent frustrations, including a contentious unpunished collision with Charles Leclerc at Spa-Francorchamps.

Piastri has achieved nine race wins and 28 podiums in Formula 1 as of the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix. He finished fifth at the Hungarian Grand Prix in July. Herbert’s assessment indicates Piastri feels pressure alongside teammate Lando Norris.

George Russell’s future with Mercedes is secured for 2026 alongside Kimi Antonelli. His contract, signed in October 2025, includes a performance clause for a 2027 renewal. Russell has seven career wins and 29 podiums as of the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix this season, reigniting his championship aspirations. He finished seventh at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Despite his successes, Russell is perceived to be under similar ‘No. 2 pressure’ within the Mercedes team.

Isack Hadjar joined Red Bull Racing for the 2026 season, partnering Max Verstappen after replacing Yuki Tsunoda. Hadjar has openly expressed a ‘bit sad’ sentiment regarding tracks being evaluated based on energy recovery potential under the new regulations.

Hadjar secured a podium finish at the Dutch Grand Prix in 2025 during his rookie season and has scored several points finishes. He finished eighth at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Herbert includes Hadjar in the group experiencing this internal team pressure.

Charles Leclerc signed a new multi-year contract extension with Ferrari in June 2026, ahead of his home Monaco Grand Prix. This agreement reportedly contains a break clause for 2027 if Ferrari fails to provide a championship-contending car.

Leclerc currently races alongside Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari and is third in the 2026 drivers’ standings, ahead of Hamilton. He secured second place at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Herbert also identifies Leclerc as facing ‘No. 2 pressure’ within the Scuderia.

‘What is happening to Oscar Piastri happens in every team. I’m sure George Russell understands it. I’m sure Isack Hadjar probably feels it in some way too and maybe even Charles Leclerc. We all feel that pressure.’

The collective experience of these drivers underscores the intense competitive environment of Formula 1, particularly as teams and individuals adapt to the demands of the 2026 technical regulations.
