Lewis Hamilton will commence the Hungarian Grand Prix from fifth position on the grid after receiving a three-place penalty. The Ferrari driver was sanctioned for impeding Oscar Piastri’s McLaren during the final qualifying session at the Hungaroring on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Hamilton had initially secured the second-fastest time, just 0.012 seconds behind pole-sitter Lando Norris.

The incident occurred at Turn 1 during Q3. Hamilton was on a cool-down lap after completing his final flying run, while Piastri was beginning a push lap. Video footage indicated Piastri was forced to take evasive action, running wide and aborting his lap due to Hamilton’s presence on the racing line.

The FIA stewards initiated an investigation immediately following the session. They reviewed extensive evidence, including video footage, telemetry data, team radio communications, and in-car video from both cars. Both Hamilton and Piastri, along with their respective team representatives, were summoned to the stewards’ office.

Hamilton explained to the stewards that he had just finished a fast lap and did not receive the team’s radio message regarding Piastri’s approach until the McLaren was already in close proximity. He further stated that Piastri’s car was not visible in his mirrors due to his track position.

Despite Hamilton’s explanation, the stewards concluded that Car 44 ‘unnecessarily impeded’ Car 81 during qualifying. This infringement of FIA F1 Regulations resulted in the three-place grid penalty for the Ferrari driver.

Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur accepted responsibility for the incident. Vasseur stated that the team was at fault for not providing Hamilton with timely information about Piastri’s fast-approaching car.

The penalty elevates Charles Leclerc to second on the grid, with Kimi Antonelli moving to third. Oscar Piastri will now start from fourth position, directly ahead of Hamilton.

The initial qualifying results saw Lando Norris claim pole position with a 1:17.207 lap. Hamilton was second (1:17.219), followed by Charles Leclerc (1:17.445), Kimi Antonelli (1:17.479), and Oscar Piastri (1:17.684). Max Verstappen qualified sixth, George Russell seventh, Isack Hadjar eighth, Arvid Lindblad ninth, and Nico Hulkenberg tenth.

Hamilton expressed disappointment after qualifying, noting his mind was ‘elsewhere’ due to the potential penalty. He also questioned Ferrari’s strategy to send him out first for the final Q3 run, believing he had the performance for pole position.

Piastri’s frustration was evident on team radio, reportedly exclaiming ‘Fuck me, man’ and gesturing towards the Ferrari driver. He later commented that he saw Hamilton from the start line and expected him to move.

Other incidents during Q3 included spins for both Max Verstappen and George Russell, which brought out yellow flags. Kimi Antonelli is also under investigation for a potential yellow flag infringement.

This incident follows previous communication challenges for Ferrari this season. Earlier in March 2026, Charles Leclerc voiced frustration over a hybrid deployment issue during Chinese Grand Prix sprint qualifying, which he attributed to a lack of communication.
