Lewis Hamilton recently addressed his long-standing experiences with bullying, outlining the process he adopted to manage such encounters. The seven-time world champion spoke at the Hungarian Grand Prix, highlighting the significant role martial arts played in his early life.

Hamilton explained that learning karate from a young age provided him with essential discipline. He noted that this structured activity helped channel his considerable energy, which he felt might otherwise have led him astray during his upbringing.

He began karate at six years old, specifically requesting to join classes due to ongoing bullying. This period of harassment extended throughout his junior and high school years, impacting a significant portion of his youth.

The bullying Hamilton faced was multifaceted, encompassing both physical altercations and racial abuse. He recalled being one of only a few Black students in Stevenage, where he was often targeted by older, stronger children.

Hamilton described these repeated difficult moments as ‘paper cuts’ or ‘wounds’ that collectively shaped his character. He reflected on how these environmental challenges were instrumental in forming his mindset.

The confidence gained from karate enabled him to handle himself against bullies, a skill he later applied to the competitive environment of the racetrack. He stated it helped him understand his inner strength.

Hamilton has consistently maintained that he utilised these adverse experiences as ‘fuel’ for his personal and professional development. This approach contributed to his resilience throughout his career.

Currently, Hamilton is competing in his second season with Ferrari, having joined the team at the conclusion of the 2024 season. He presently holds second position in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship standings.
