Mika Häkkinen has questioned the rationale behind McLaren pursuing Max Verstappen, emphasizing the stability of the current driver lineup. The two-time world champion stated, “why rock the boat?” when the team already fields two high-performing drivers.

Häkkinen, who secured both his titles with McLaren, highlighted the importance of team spirit for success. He believes that introducing a new driver, even one of Verstappen’s caliber, could disrupt the established harmony within the team.

McLaren’s current drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, both hold multi-year contracts. Norris extended his commitment to the team in January 2024, securing his position until at least the end of the 2026 season, with indications of a longer term.

Piastri’s contract with McLaren was extended in March 2025, ensuring his presence with the Woking-based squad until at least the end of the 2028 season.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has publicly affirmed the team’s satisfaction with its current driver pairing. Brown stated in June 2026 that McLaren is not actively seeking new drivers, expressing full confidence in Norris and Piastri.

The speculation surrounding Verstappen’s future intensified following the official announcement of GianPiero Lambiase’s move. Red Bull confirmed in April 2026 that Verstappen’s long-time race engineer will join McLaren as Chief Racing Officer in 2028.

Verstappen’s current contract with Red Bull Racing runs until the end of the 2028 season. This agreement includes a performance-related exit clause, the specifics of which have not been publicly disclosed.

Reports indicate that this clause allows Verstappen to explore other options if he is not within the top two of the Drivers’ standings by the summer break. Verstappen is currently sixth in the championship, a position that reportedly activates this clause.

Red Bull is reportedly attempting to secure Verstappen’s long-term future by offering a new contract. This proposed deal would extend his tenure until the end of 2029 and include a salary increase, while notably removing the existing exit clause.

Verstappen’s management reportedly received this offer weeks ago, with the driver having until mid-October to make a decision. This situation positions the four-time world champion at a critical juncture regarding his F1 career.
