George Russell has reflected on the physical difficulties encountered during his unexpected Formula 1 debut with Mercedes. The British driver revealed he faced significant challenges fitting into the car during his first competitive outing for the team.

The situation arose at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, when Russell was called upon to replace Lewis Hamilton, who had tested positive for COVID-19.

Russell, who was driving for Williams at the time, had to adapt quickly to the Mercedes W11, a car originally tailored to Hamilton’s physique.

He specifically mentioned having to wear shoes significantly smaller than his usual size to accommodate himself within the cockpit.

Despite these physical constraints, Russell delivered a notable performance at the Sakhir event. He led a significant portion of the race before pit stop errors and a puncture impacted his result.

Currently, Russell is a confirmed driver for Mercedes for the 2026 Formula 1 season, partnering with Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

His contract extension with Mercedes was announced in October 2025, securing his position with the team for the new regulatory era.

Russell has achieved seven Grand Prix victories and 29 podium finishes in his Formula 1 career, including wins in the 2024 Austrian and Las Vegas Grands Prix, and the 2025 Canadian and Singapore Grands Prix.

Discussions regarding car design for the 2026 regulations have also seen Russell, alongside other drivers, raise concerns about low ride heights and potential long-term health implications.

These broader concerns about the 2026 car design are distinct from the personal fit issues Russell experienced during his 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix debut.
