A historical interaction between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso from the 2007 Formula 1 season has recently resurfaced, detailing a blunt exchange between the then-rookie and the reigning world champion. Mark Slade, Alonso’s racing engineer at McLaren during that period, has provided insight into Hamilton’s assertive approach.
Slade revealed that Hamilton, in his debut season, directly questioned Alonso’s pace. The comment, ‘Why are you so slow?’, highlights the intense competitive dynamic that quickly developed within the McLaren team.
In 2007, Hamilton joined McLaren as a rookie, partnering Alonso, who had secured back-to-back world championships in 2005 and 2006. Hamilton immediately demonstrated significant pace, matching Alonso point-for-point throughout the season.
This unexpected competitiveness from a debutant led to considerable inter-team tension. The rivalry between the two drivers ultimately contributed to Alonso’s departure from McLaren at the end of that season.
Currently, in the 2026 season, Fernando Alonso continues to compete with Aston Martin. The team introduced a major upgrade package for their AMR26 chassis at the Hungarian Grand Prix in late July.
Alonso finished 14th in Hungary, expressing satisfaction with the AMR26’s performance post-upgrade. He noted the car provided a solid foundation for future development, particularly with an upgraded Honda power unit anticipated for the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix.
Aston Martin had faced challenges earlier in the 2026 campaign, with Alonso previously stating that every circuit exposed a new weakness in the car. The Hungarian upgrades aimed to improve their midfield competitiveness.
Lewis Hamilton, now driving for Ferrari, is currently second in the 2026 drivers’ championship. He has secured one victory this season and has consistently finished within the top six in every round.
Hamilton has expressed optimism for the second half of the season, anticipating further upgrades from Ferrari. He believes this period typically sees him perform stronger.
Earlier this year, during pre-season testing in Bahrain, Hamilton commented on the 2026 regulations cars. He initially found them ‘more fun’ to drive but later remarked they felt ‘slower than GP2’ at that stage.
Both veteran drivers, now in their 40s, continue to be subjects of discussion regarding their longevity in Formula 1. Ralf Schumacher, among others, has suggested it is ‘time’ for both Hamilton and Alonso to consider retirement at the end of the 2026 season.
Despite such commentary, Hamilton is contracted with Ferrari until at least the end of the 2027 season. Alonso’s future beyond 2026 remains uncertain, with a decision expected after the summer break.
