Giancarlo Fisichella has attributed Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s current Formula 1 success to Toto Wolff’s early conviction in the young driver’s talent. Fisichella noted Wolff was the first to believe in ‘Kimi’ during his formative years.

Antonelli, now in his sophomore F1 season with Mercedes, is leading the 2026 Drivers’ Championship. He has secured five Grand Prix victories this year, including wins in China, Japan, Miami, Canada, and Monaco.

The Italian driver also achieved five consecutive pole positions, converting his first three from pole into race wins. This rapid ascent has established him as a benchmark in the current season.

Antonelli joined the Mercedes Junior Team in 2018 after being scouted by Wolff. His junior career included multiple karting championships and titles in Italian and ADAC F4 in 2022.

He made his Formula 1 debut in 2025, replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. His rookie season was marked by inconsistent form, though he secured a maiden podium at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Wolff consistently defended Antonelli during his challenging rookie year, particularly after a crash at the Austrian Grand Prix and a nine-race point-less streak.

The Mercedes Team Principal has publicly praised Antonelli’s exceptional skills and maturity. Wolff has also worked to manage external expectations, especially from the Italian media.

Fisichella, the last Italian Grand Prix winner before Antonelli in 2006, expressed his satisfaction. He highlighted the end of a 20-year wait for an Italian victor in Formula 1.

‘I will say ‘finally!’ I’m happy about that because 20 years is too long. The last Italian winner of a Grand Prix was myself 20 years ago, and now this year, with Kimi, this is done.’

Antonelli’s 2026 campaign has not been without setbacks. Reliability issues affected his races in Barcelona-Catalunya and Great Britain.

These mechanical problems have allowed teammate George Russell to reduce Antonelli’s championship lead. Russell currently trails by 25 points.

Wolff has stressed the importance of Antonelli learning from mistakes and remaining grounded. He believes Antonelli possesses the qualities of a future World Champion.

Fisichella also recalled Antonelli’s difficult first Free Practice 1 outing at Monza two years ago, where he crashed the car.
