The FIA International Court of Appeal is today hearing the case brought by McLaren and Red Bull Racing concerning the rescinded penalties for Pierre Gasly at the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix. The hearing is taking place at the FIA headquarters in Paris, France, on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
Gasly, driving for Alpine, originally received two five-second time penalties during the Monaco Grand Prix on June 7, 2026. These sanctions were for exceeding the pit lane speed limit, with recorded speeds of 60.1 km/h and 60.4 km/h.
The application of these penalties, which Gasly had not served in-race, demoted him from his third-place finish on the road to seventh in the provisional classification. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar consequently inherited the third position.
Alpine subsequently lodged a petition for a right of review into the stewards’ decision. This review revealed a measurement error by Formula One Management, the official timekeepers.
It was determined that the pit lane timing system used an incorrect distance for calculating average speed. The actual shortest geometric path through the pit entry timing zone was 77cm shorter than the 2,692 cm initially recorded.
This discrepancy meant that the speeds of drivers were overstated by the system. The stewards, on June 12, 2026, accepted this as a ‘significant, relevant and new element’ and rescinded both penalties for Gasly.
The decision reinstated Gasly to third place, marking his first podium finish of the current season. However, this reversal prompted appeals from McLaren and Red Bull Racing.
Their appeals are based on the principle of fairness, highlighting that other drivers received similar pit lane speeding penalties due to the same timing error. Oscar Piastri, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and Franco Colapinto were among those penalised.
These drivers served their penalties during the race, making their sanctions irreversible and unappealable under current regulations. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who was originally classified fourth, moved back to fifth with Gasly’s reinstatement.
Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar lost his inherited podium position as a direct result of Gasly’s penalties being overturned. The appeals by McLaren and Red Bull were officially lodged on June 16, 2026.
The hearing today is being conducted behind closed doors, a measure requested by the parties involved for confidentiality reasons. The FIA has stated that a decision will be published as soon as possible following the conclusion of the proceedings.
