Charles Leclerc is preparing for the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, anticipating a challenging qualifying session. The Ferrari driver aims to extract maximum performance from the SF-26 as the team seeks to improve its pace on the new circuit. Today, September 11, 2026, marks the commencement of the Grand Prix weekend in the Spanish capital.

The new Madrid circuit, referred to as the ‘Madring’ in some reports, spans 5.416 kilometres. Its layout combines tight, street-style sections with faster sweeps through the Valdebebas area. A notable feature is the 550-metre banked corner, La Monumental, which boasts a 24% gradient.

Ferrari holds a unique advantage at this new venue. Both Leclerc and teammate Lewis Hamilton completed a filming day at the Madrid circuit on July 9. This session allowed the Scuderia to gather crucial data on braking points and kerb characteristics, covering the maximum permitted 200 kilometres.

This early track knowledge provides Ferrari with an edge as rivals approach the circuit blind for the initial Free Practice 1 session. The SF-26, Ferrari’s 2026 challenger, has demonstrated strong cornering performance throughout the current season.

The car excels particularly in medium and high-speed corner sequences. However, this design philosophy results in higher drag on straights. While this proved detrimental at Monza, the technical nature of the Madrid circuit is expected to mitigate this penalty.

The SF-26 represents Ferrari’s entry into the new 2026 Formula 1 regulations. These regulations introduce movable front aerodynamics and an increased role for hybrid energy within the power unit.

Earlier this season, the SF-26 secured two Grand Prix victories: Lewis Hamilton in Barcelona and Charles Leclerc at the British Grand Prix. The car has also achieved nine Grand Prix podiums as of the 2026 Italian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton, in his second season with Ferrari, currently trails Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 76 points in the Drivers’ Championship. There are ten rounds remaining in the 2026 season.

Ferrari’s focus remains on optimising the SF-26’s setup to consistently extract its potential. The team’s development strategy is crucial in maintaining competitiveness against rivals like Mercedes and McLaren.

Charles Leclerc stated, ‘We need to look into it.’

The team’s performance in Madrid’s qualifying will be a key indicator of their progress and ability to leverage their specific car strengths on this new, demanding track. The Spanish Grand Prix weekend concludes on September 13, 2026.
