British analysts have issued warnings to Formula 1 teams regarding the complexities of the current 2026 season, particularly highlighting the internal challenges faced by Red Bull Racing. The team is reportedly grappling with significant internal divisions concerning the future of driver Max Verstappen.
A power struggle within Red Bull’s ownership structure has emerged, with Thai stakeholder Chalerm Yoovidhya reportedly at odds with Austrian counterparts Mark Mateschitz and CEO Oliver Mintzlaff. This disagreement centres on how to manage Verstappen’s contract and its embedded exit clauses.
Verstappen, a four-time world champion, holds a contract with Red Bull until 2028. However, his deal includes performance-related exit clauses that could allow him to depart prematurely.
Reports from Germany indicate that Red Bull is considering buying out Verstappen’s exit clause. Mintzlaff, however, is reportedly not in favour of this strategy, citing the substantial financial outlay and a perceived lack of viable alternatives for the driver.
Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, has affirmed the driver’s loyalty to Red Bull but confirmed the existence of exit clauses in his contract. Vermeulen emphasised that these clauses have never been exercised, but stressed the necessity of a competitive car.
The current 2026 Formula 1 season has seen Verstappen in a challenging position, sitting seventh in the drivers’ championship as of mid-July. This contrasts sharply with his previous four consecutive titles between 2020 and 2024.
Red Bull Racing is currently fourth in the constructors’ standings, trailing leaders Mercedes by 205 points. Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship.
The team’s performance has been a point of concern, with Verstappen having secured only one podium finish this season at the Canadian Grand Prix. He has also been vocal in his criticism of the new 2026 regulations, which mandate a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electric power.
Laurent Mekies assumed the role of Team Principal at Red Bull Racing following Christian Horner’s departure. Mekies’ decision to prioritise the 2025 car’s development late last season is believed to have compromised resources for the current 2026 campaign.
The deadline for Verstappen to inform Red Bull of his intention to activate a performance-related exit clause is reportedly mid-October. This situation fuels ongoing speculation about his potential move to rival teams such as Mercedes or McLaren.
Mercedes driver George Russell’s current contract is a one-year deal, potentially leaving him vulnerable should Verstappen pursue a move to the German manufacturer.
Beyond Red Bull’s internal issues, the broader Formula 1 grid faces significant challenges with the new 2026 regulations. Haas driver Oliver Bearman warned in January that teams would inevitably ‘make mistakes’ adapting to the active aerodynamics and revised engine formula.
Former Red Bull technical chief Adrian Newey had previously raised concerns about the 50/50 power split, suggesting the internal combustion engine might function more as a generator throughout races.
The 2026 calendar has also seen disruption, with the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix postponed indefinitely in March due to security concerns. This reduced the season to 22 rounds, with the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix also remaining at risk.
