Formula 1 is actively pursuing an expansion of its sprint race calendar, a strategy projected to generate billions in revenue. Reports indicate a potential increase to eight sprint events per season from the 2026 championship.

This commercial drive is significantly influenced by feedback from key figures within the sport, including Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver has consistently advocated for modifications to the sprint format.

Verstappen’s primary concern has centered on the current sprint structure’s impact on the Grand Prix itself. He believes the existing format can diminish the main event’s significance.

His suggestions include making the sprint a standalone competition with its own dedicated qualifying session. This would separate it entirely from the main Grand Prix weekend structure.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has affirmed the sport’s commitment to evolution, aiming to attract new audiences and maximize commercial opportunities. He emphasizes the importance of driver, team, and fan input.

Domenicali has also highlighted the positive reception of sprint weekends in various markets. These events have demonstrably contributed to increased viewership figures.

The FIA is collaborating with F1 management and teams to refine sprint race regulations for the 2026 season. Discussions are focused on implementing a ‘sprint Saturday’ concept.

This proposed change aims to address driver concerns regarding the sprint’s influence on the Grand Prix weekend. It seeks to create a more distinct identity for the sprint event.

While the expansion is underway, the suitability of certain circuits for sprint races remains a point of discussion. Monaco, with its tight layout, is frequently cited as a challenging venue.

Concerns persist that a sprint race at Monaco could result in a processional event, mirroring the characteristics of its main Grand Prix.

Team principals have offered varied reactions to the expanded sprint calendar. While acknowledging the financial benefits, some have voiced concerns regarding increased workload and potential car damage.

Red Bull Racing has generally supported initiatives designed to enhance the spectacle of Formula 1. This support is contingent on not compromising the integrity of the Grand Prix.
