Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has addressed the increasing criticism from drivers regarding the 2026 technical regulations. His comments come as the current Formula 1 season is halfway through, with the new rules continuing to divide opinion among competitors.

Max Verstappen has been particularly vocal, describing the new regulations as ‘anti-racing’. Other drivers, including Oscar Piastri, have labelled the new approach a ‘pretty crap way to go racing’. Lando Norris also noted that business interests appear to have overtaken the sport.

The 2026 regulations place a significantly greater emphasis on electric power and energy management. This shift has altered the driving challenge, moving away from outright grip-limited speed in corners. Instead, the focus is now on strategic energy deployment down the straights.

Domenicali affirmed that Formula 1 is not attempting to silence drivers or prevent them from expressing concerns. He stated that the sport’s beauty lies in everyone having an opinion. However, he also highlighted the importance of constructive criticism.

The F1 CEO expressed a preference for discussions to occur ‘between four walls’ to find solutions. He cautioned that excessive vocal criticism, if ‘out of the scheme’, risks negativity becoming ‘personal’. This sentiment suggests a concern over the tone of recent remarks.

Domenicali also pointed to the sport’s fanbase, indicating that they are enjoying the new-look Formula 1. He emphasised that fans remain a priority above all else, including the drivers themselves.

He urged drivers to adopt a broader vision when considering their criticisms. Domenicali stressed the need for a collective path forward for the sport.

Criticisms were particularly pronounced at certain energy-starved circuits earlier this season. Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps were specifically mentioned as venues where driver concerns were evident.
