Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the current Formula 1 World Championship leader, will start the upcoming Italian Grand Prix from the back of the grid. This penalty stems from a complete power unit change on his Mercedes car ahead of his home race at Monza.
Mercedes confirmed the decision, explaining that Antonelli had reached his permitted allocation limit for power unit components. The strategic move aims to prevent further technical issues that have affected the team this season.
The team has encountered reliability problems with its power units during the current season, including an incident that forced Antonelli to retire from the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. This necessitated the introduction of new components.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff stated that the decision to take the penalty at Monza was based on data analysis. He emphasized that the team’s focus remains on the championship campaign.
‘Our calculations say that that’s the best track to take it,’ Wolff explained. ‘Obviously, algorithms don’t take their nationality into consideration. We’re here to fight for a championship and not get the most PR.’
Antonelli, the 20-year-old Italian driver, acknowledged the decision was a shared one. He noted that Monza is considered one of the easier circuits for overtaking, despite the disappointment of a back-of-grid start at his home event.
The Autodromo Nazionale Monza, known as ‘The Temple of Speed,’ is characterized by its long straights and high-speed sections. These features are conducive to overtaking, which Mercedes factored into their strategic decision.
For the 2026 season, Monza also incorporates new ‘Straight Mode’ and ‘Overtake Mode’ systems. These active aerodynamic and electrical boost features are designed to enhance overtaking opportunities across the circuit’s four designated zones.
Antonelli currently leads the 2026 Drivers’ Championship with 242 points after 12 of 23 rounds. He holds a 59-point advantage over his nearest rivals.
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are tied for second and third place, both on 183 points. Lando Norris sits fourth with 159 points, followed by Charles Leclerc in fifth with 155 points.
Max Verstappen is currently sixth in the standings with 112 points, trailing Antonelli by 130 points.
At the previous race, the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, Antonelli finished second, with Russell in third, behind race winner Lando Norris.
Mercedes has indicated that George Russell may also require an additional power unit change later in the season due to similar reliability concerns. The team has not yet confirmed where Russell would incur such a penalty.
The Italian Grand Prix weekend at Monza is scheduled to run from Friday, September 4, to Sunday, September 6, 2026.
