Max Verstappen secured a sixth-place starting position for the Dutch Grand Prix sprint race at Circuit Zandvoort on Friday. The Red Bull driver reported difficulties in finding optimal balance and grip during the session. This result places him behind several key rivals for the upcoming sprint event.

Verstappen acknowledged the challenges faced with the RB22 car. He stated, ‘It was difficult to find enough grip and the right balance.’

He further elaborated that while the car’s performance marked an improvement from the initial free practice session, it remained insufficient to challenge for a higher grid slot.

The focus for Red Bull now shifts to understanding the car’s balance ahead of Saturday’s sprint race, the main qualifying session, and Sunday’s Grand Prix. Verstappen emphasized the need to ‘find a bit more grip’ to close the performance gap.

George Russell of Mercedes secured sprint pole position with a lap time of 1m 11.567s. McLaren’s Lando Norris qualified second, followed by Charles Leclerc for Ferrari in third.

Oscar Piastri placed fourth for McLaren, with Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli completing the top five. Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate, Liam Lawson, who is substituting for Isack Hadjar, qualified eleventh.

The top ten for the Dutch Grand Prix sprint qualifying included Russell, Norris, Leclerc, Piastri, Antonelli, Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi), and Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls).

The Zandvoort circuit is hosting a sprint race weekend for the first time in 2026, marking the fifth of six sprint events this season. The format includes a single free practice session before sprint qualifying.

Pirelli’s Mario Isola previously noted that Zandvoort’s resurfaced asphalt can lead to inconsistent grip levels across the lap. The circuit’s coastal location also introduces strong wind gusts, impacting aerodynamic performance.

Red Bull has experienced an inconsistent 2026 season, with the RB22 showing varying performance. Verstappen has secured three podiums in the last four Grands Prix but is yet to win a race this year.

Christian Horner, former Red Bull Team Principal, has been out of his role since last year’s British Grand Prix. He has been linked with various projects but has stated he is in no rush to return to F1.

The sprint race format for 2026 features shorter qualifying sessions: SQ1 (12 minutes), SQ2 (10 minutes), and SQ3 (8 minutes). Six slowest drivers are eliminated in SQ1 and SQ2, leaving ten for the pole shootout.

Points are awarded to the top eight finishers in the sprint race, ranging from eight points for first place down to one point for eighth.
