Robert Doornbos, former Formula 1 driver and analyst, stated before the 2026 season that Andrea Kimi Antonelli possessed the qualities of a future F1 champion. This early assessment appears to be validated by Antonelli’s performance in the current Formula 1 season.
Antonelli, competing for Mercedes in his second F1 season, has established a significant lead in the Drivers’ Championship. He currently holds an 81-point advantage over his teammate George Russell after 14 races.
The Italian driver has secured eight victories in the 2026 season to date. His recent win at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid marked his eighth triumph.
Doornbos has reiterated his pre-season prediction, noting Antonelli’s strong development. He highlighted Antonelli’s rapid progression through junior categories and exceptional car control.
The former F1 driver also pointed to Antonelli’s maturity and quick adaptation to the Mercedes W17 chassis. Doornbos now views Antonelli as the clear number one driver within the Mercedes team.
Lando Norris, the reigning world champion, described Antonelli’s 2026 performance as ‘pretty scary’. Norris observed that Antonelli does not appear to be a driver in only his second F1 season.
David Coulthard, another former Formula 1 driver, has labelled Antonelli a ‘phenomenon’. Coulthard dismissed suggestions that Antonelli’s success is primarily due to luck.
Despite Antonelli’s commanding lead, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff remains cautious. Wolff acknowledged that the W17 chassis and its power unit have been ‘a little fragile’ this season.
Reliability issues have cost Mercedes points throughout the year, leading Wolff to refrain from premature championship celebrations. Both drivers have experienced technical failures.
Antonelli’s consistency has been a key factor, particularly in challenging conditions. He also became the youngest polesitter in China and the youngest F1 championship leader in Japan earlier this season.
Mercedes communications director Bradley Lord noted Antonelli’s tendency to be overly self-critical. However, Antonelli has consistently responded to difficult weekends with strong performances.
George Russell has conceded he is no longer in contention for the drivers’ championship. He stated that Antonelli has performed better and deserves his current lead.
