Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard has stated that Lewis Hamilton continues to operate at an elite level during the 2026 season. Coulthard specifically highlighted Hamilton’s unwavering commitment and refusal to concede defeat, even amidst Mercedes’ current car performance challenges.

Speaking on a recent podcast, Coulthard praised Hamilton’s resilience. He noted that the seven-time world champion’s motivation remains high, suggesting his extensive experience is invaluable to Mercedes as the team navigates the new technical regulations introduced for the current 2026 season.

Coulthard’s observations come as Mercedes has yet to secure a victory this season. Hamilton’s best finish so far in 2026 has been a third place at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton extended his contract with Mercedes in August 2025, securing his position with the team through the 2026 season and beyond. This multi-year deal was confirmed ahead of the Italian Grand Prix last year.

The contract ensures Hamilton’s involvement in Mercedes’ transition into the new power unit regulations for 2026, a key factor in his decision to remain with the team.

As of mid-September 2026, Hamilton holds fifth position in the Drivers’ Championship with 128 points. He has achieved three podium finishes this season.

These podiums include the third place in Monaco, alongside second-place finishes at the Spanish Grand Prix and the Canadian Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s qualifying performances have shown inconsistency, with an average grid position of seventh. He has out-qualified his teammate George Russell in seven of the sixteen races completed this season.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff recently acknowledged the team’s performance deficit. However, Wolff praised both Hamilton and Russell for their consistent effort and valuable feedback in the ongoing car development process.

Mercedes introduced a significant upgrade package at the British Grand Prix earlier this season. While showing promising signs, these updates have not yet fully closed the performance gap to front-runners Red Bull and Ferrari.

The W17 chassis has encountered struggles with aerodynamic efficiency throughout the current campaign. The team’s focus is currently divided between improving the W17 and developing the all-new car for the 2027 regulations.

Technical Director James Allison confirmed that data gathered from the 2026 season is being rigorously analysed. This analysis aims to inform the design philosophy for future cars, particularly concerning the new engine architecture.
