Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard has highlighted Max Verstappen’s distinct approach to racing, specifically commending his participation in the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Coulthard’s remarks underscore Verstappen’s commitment beyond the Grand Prix circuit, setting him apart from his contemporaries on the grid. The comments were made on the ‘Up To Speed’ podcast earlier this season.
Coulthard stated that Verstappen’s decision to compete in the endurance event demonstrated a level of dedication he believes no other current Formula 1 driver would undertake. He questioned whether any other driver would accept such a challenge, emphasizing Verstappen’s old-school commitment to racing.
Verstappen made his anticipated debut at the Nürburgring 24 Hours earlier this year. Driving a Mercedes, his team was positioned for victory before a driveshaft issue forced a lengthy garage return, ending their hopes.
Opportunities for Formula 1 drivers to race in other series are rare. Fernando Alonso notably missed the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix for the Indy 500, while Lance Stroll recently made his GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup debut.
This unique commitment from Verstappen comes amidst a challenging 2026 Formula 1 season for the four-time world champion. He recently secured a hard-earned second-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, describing it as an ‘incredible’ result.
Verstappen reported ongoing struggles with his car at the Hungaroring, citing issues with oversteer and drag. Despite these aerodynamic and shift difficulties, he advanced from fourth on the grid, overtaking Charles Leclerc early in the race.
His performance in Hungary involved significant defensive driving, particularly against Lewis Hamilton, to maintain his position and secure the podium finish. This followed a season where Red Bull Racing has struggled to consistently match the pace of Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren.
Coulthard has also positioned Verstappen as the ultimate benchmark for the effectiveness of the 2026 F1 regulatory changes. He noted Verstappen’s outspoken criticism of the new rules, which the driver has described as feeling like ‘Formula E on steroids’.
Verstappen’s frustration with the new regulations has been evident since pre-season testing, and he currently sits ninth in the drivers’ standings after three races. Coulthard believes Verstappen’s honesty in his assessments is valuable.
