Jock Clear, a veteran Formula 1 engineer who has worked with both Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher, has outlined the fundamental differences in their approaches to the sport. Clear, who partnered with Schumacher at Mercedes from 2011 to 2012 and then with Hamilton from 2013 to 2014, stated that the two seven-time world champions are ‘very different’ in their methods.

Clear, currently a senior performance engineer at Ferrari and driver coach for Charles Leclerc, emphasized that while Hamilton possesses immense natural talent, Schumacher exhibited a more comprehensive ‘complete overview’ of the sport.

Schumacher’s focus extended to meticulously perfecting every aspect surrounding him, including the selection of key personnel within the team. Clear used a quote from Muhammad Ali to illustrate this, noting that Schumacher understood where the ‘pebbles in his shoe’ were and ensured their removal.

In contrast, Clear observed that Hamilton tends to ‘wear his heart on his sleeve,’ openly displaying his emotions, a trait not typically seen in the more reserved Schumacher during his career.

Clear’s extensive career in Formula 1 saw him join Ferrari in 2014. He previously served as Head of the Ferrari Driver Academy, overseeing the development of young talent such as Oliver Bearman.

However, Clear departed his full-time Ferrari role after the 2025 season, citing the demanding 24-race calendar as a factor in his decision to seek a new work-life balance. Marc Gené assumed his position at the Ferrari Driver Academy in January 2026.

Clear remains connected to Maranello in a semi-retired capacity, currently coaching Ferrari Driver Academy prospect Nico Macchignani, who is set to compete in Formula 3 with Trident in 2027.

Lewis Hamilton, now in his second season with Ferrari, is competing for the Scuderia in the 2026 Formula 1 season. His contract with the Italian team extends through the end of 2027, with an option for the 2028 season.

The 2025 season proved challenging for Hamilton at Ferrari, as he did not secure a single Grand Prix podium finish and was outperformed by teammate Charles Leclerc. However, the 2026 season has seen a turnaround, with Hamilton securing his maiden Ferrari Grand Prix victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.

He has since added second-place finishes in Canada and Monaco, along with a third-place podium at Silverstone. Hamilton is currently third in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship standings.

Despite his improved performance, Hamilton is mathematically unlikely to catch Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, who leads the 2026 championship. Antonelli, a Mercedes junior program graduate, is having a dominant season, having won eight of the opening 14 Grands Prix.

Mercedes currently holds a significant lead in the Constructors’ standings. Hamilton has expressed confidence in Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur but has questioned the broader organizational structure above Vasseur.

Ferrari’s SF-26 car has demonstrated improved usability and predictability compared to its 2025 predecessor, despite a power unit deficit. The team has also implemented internal hierarchy changes for 2026, including new hires in aerodynamics and chassis development.

Lewis Hamilton holds the record for most Grand Prix wins with 106 and most pole positions with 104. Michael Schumacher secured 91 Grand Prix victories and holds the record for most fastest laps with 77.

‘Lewis Hamilton probably has more natural talent than Michael Schumacher, but he didn’t have the same complete overview that Michael had,’ Clear stated. ‘Michael understood very well where those pebbles were, and he made sure everything around him was perfect.’
