Marcin Budkowski has been appointed as the new Team Principal for the Cadillac Formula 1 Team, effective August 12, 2026. This leadership change occurs as the American outfit continues its inaugural 2026 Formula 1 season. Budkowski brings over two decades of Formula 1 experience to his new role.
His extensive career includes senior positions across multiple prominent teams and the FIA. Budkowski previously held roles with Prost, McLaren, and served as Executive Director for Renault and Alpine. He also worked within the FIA’s technical department.
A significant period of his career was spent at Ferrari as an aerodynamicist from 2002 to 2007. This tenure coincided with Michael Schumacher’s era of dominance, where the Scuderia secured multiple championships. Budkowski was part of the team led by Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, and Rory Byrne.
Budkowski has reflected on this time, stating he was fortunate to be part of such a successful organisation. He drew inspiration from the team’s methods, particularly in building a strong, high-performing culture. He noted the importance of detail, process, and a blame-free environment.
He aims to apply these insights to Cadillac’s F1 project. Budkowski’s focus will be on maximising car development within the cost cap. He intends to align personnel, tools, and information flow for rapid decision-making and continuous performance improvement.
Cadillac’s CEO, Dan Towriss, stated the team’s objective is to compete at the front, not merely participate. Budkowski’s appointment is seen as a step to strengthen the organisation and develop a winning mindset.
The team has completed 11 races in its debut 2026 season and is yet to score championship points. Their best result so far is a 13th-place finish in China. Cadillac’s current driver lineup features Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas.
This leadership transition follows Graeme Lowdon’s departure, who was instrumental in forming the team. Cadillac describes the change as a planned evolution from its initial build phase. The team’s chassis, the MAC-26, is named after Mario Andretti.
Cadillac currently utilises Ferrari’s 2026 Formula 1 power unit. Budkowski will assume his role publicly starting at the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix weekend.
