Max Verstappen secured Red Bull’s first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on Sunday, October 4. This win marked a significant milestone, being the maiden triumph for the Red Bull Ford Powertrains engine.
Following the race, Formula 1 legend Martin Brundle publicly credited Christian Horner for his instrumental role in this achievement. Brundle highlighted Horner’s foresight in establishing the Red Bull Powertrains project.
Horner, who departed Red Bull in July 2025, initiated the Powertrains project in 2021. This strategic move came after Honda announced its intention to withdraw from Formula 1 beyond the 2025 season.
The decision under Horner’s tenure led to the construction of a new factory in Milton Keynes and a significant recruitment drive. Ben Hodgkinson was notably signed to lead the engine development for the new power unit.
Red Bull’s 2026 season has presented challenges, with Verstappen’s Bahrain victory ending a win drought that stretched back to the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The team currently holds fourth position in the World Championship standings.
Verstappen converted his pole position into victory at the Sepang International Circuit. He navigated a rain-disrupted start and multiple safety car interventions. Kimi Antonelli finished second for Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton securing third for Ferrari.
Horner himself extended congratulations to his former team via social media following the historic win. He posted, ‘From a hole in the ground to a race victory in just five years. Huge congratulations to Red Bull Ford Powertrains, Max and the entire team. An incredible achievement!’
This victory also holds significance for Ford, marking their first Grand Prix win in 23 years. Their previous success in Formula 1 was recorded at the 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix.
