Gabriel Bortoleto has highlighted Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s composure under pressure at Mercedes during the 2026 Formula 1 season. Bortoleto, a fellow rookie, noted Antonelli’s ability to ‘impose’ himself on teammate George Russell. This observation comes as Antonelli has made a significant impact in his second year with the Mercedes team.
Antonelli, at 19 years old, has emerged as a frontrunner in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship. He became the youngest-ever championship leader after his second victory of the season in Japan. His performance includes converting his first three pole positions into consecutive wins in China, Japan, and Miami.
The Italian driver currently leads the standings with 100 points after four rounds, holding a 20-point advantage over Russell. This strong start marks the most significant points-scoring beginning to an F1 season in a decade.
Bortoleto, who races for Audi, has acknowledged Antonelli’s talent and strong start to the season. He emphasized that Antonelli is ‘delivering an incredible start to the season’ and ‘deserves’ to be leading the championship.
Despite Antonelli’s current success, Bortoleto cautioned against premature comparisons to drivers like Max Verstappen. He stated that it is unfair to compare Antonelli to Verstappen given their age and time in Formula 1.
George Russell, initially considered the pre-season favourite, has conceded that Antonelli has outperformed him in the initial phase of the 2026 season. Russell admitted that the current 25-point deficit to Antonelli is a fair reflection of their respective performances.
The internal battle at Mercedes has seen Antonelli demonstrate superior one-lap pace, with an average delta of 0.054 seconds faster than Russell. Antonelli has also outqualified and finished ahead of Russell in five of the last eight Grands Prix.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has praised Antonelli, noting that the young driver is showing ‘traits’ to become a Formula 1 great. Wolff highlighted Antonelli’s consistent improvement in lap times and lack of mistakes.
The team’s W17 chassis has proven to be a competitive package this season, allowing both drivers to contend at the front. Antonelli’s rapid adaptation and ability to handle the demands of Formula 1 have been key factors in his strong showing.
Russell has also addressed claims of favouritism towards Antonelli within Mercedes, dismissing such speculation. He affirmed that the team’s primary objective is to secure the Constructors’ Championship.
Antonelli’s impressive run includes five consecutive Grand Prix victories, propelling him to the top of the Drivers’ Championship. This consistent performance underscores Bortoleto’s observation of Antonelli’s ability to perform under significant pressure.
