Formula 2 driver Dino Beganovic recently offered insight into Max Verstappen’s character, stating that the four-time world champion is often misjudged by the public. Beganovic, a Ferrari junior, indicated that Verstappen’s public persona as a ‘grappenmaker’ or jokester does not fully reflect his true nature.

Speaking on a Viaplay podcast, Beganovic highlighted that Verstappen, despite sometimes appearing direct or closed off in media interactions, is genuinely interested and sincere away from the cameras. This observation stems particularly from their interactions during sim racing.

Beganovic noted that Verstappen is not solely focused on himself, but rather shows curiosity about the careers and experiences of younger drivers. He specifically mentioned Verstappen asking numerous questions about Formula 2 and Beganovic’s personal progress.

Verstappen’s public remarks have become increasingly direct, especially during the current 2026 Formula 1 season. He has openly criticised issues such as low grip and tyre warmup, at times describing his Red Bull car as ‘garbage’.

His media interactions have also shown growing impatience with questions concerning Red Bull’s internal politics, historical comparisons, FIA decisions, and speculation regarding his future.

The Dutchman has been a vocal critic of the 2026 technical regulations, labelling the new cars as ‘anti-racing’ and akin to ‘Formula E on steroids’. He has also described the current state of the cars as ‘fundamentally flawed’ and a ‘joke’.

Despite his intense focus on track, Verstappen has also displayed a lighter side. In March 2026, he humorously suggested playing Mario Kart on a Nintendo Switch to ‘understand the new era’ of racing, showcasing a relatable aspect of his personality.

Historically, Verstappen has faced portrayals as a ‘robot’ by some media outlets, particularly British ones, focusing solely on his competitive drive. However, a shift in this perception has been noted, with more positive coverage emerging after his fourth world title.

Verstappen maintains a guarded private life, often stating that his personal activities are ‘nobody’s business’. Despite this, he makes efforts to connect with fans, signing autographs and taking photographs when possible.

His current contract with Red Bull extends until the end of 2028, though clauses reportedly allow for an early exit if he is not within the top two in the championship standings by the summer break. Verstappen is currently ninth in the 2026 standings.

He has openly considered options outside Formula 1 if the sport ceases to be enjoyable for him, a sentiment expressed amid his dissatisfaction with the 2026 regulations.

For the 2026 season, Verstappen changed his permanent driver number from 1 to 3, a decision made after seeking permission from Daniel Ricciardo.
