A BBC documentary is in production focusing on the 2007 Formula 1 World Championship. The season was defined by an intense three-way title fight and the ‘Spygate’ controversy involving McLaren and Ferrari.
The news emerged via Spanish F1 commentator Antonio Lobato. He stated on SoyMotor’s Twitch channel that the BBC had invited him to participate, an offer he declined. Lobato was a commentator during the 2007 season.
The championship featured McLaren’s rookie driver Lewis Hamilton against his teammate, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso. They were both challenged by Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen for the drivers’ title.
The title fight went down to the final race in Brazil. Räikkönen ultimately secured the championship with 110 points. Hamilton and Alonso both finished the season with 109 points, with Hamilton placed second on count-back.
A significant element of the 2007 season was the espionage controversy known as ‘Spygate’. The case involved allegations that confidential technical information from Ferrari was passed to McLaren.
The controversy centered on a 780-page dossier of Ferrari data found in the possession of McLaren’s chief designer, Mike Coughlan. The information was alleged to have come from Ferrari’s Nigel Stepney.
As a result of the investigation by the FIA, McLaren was handed a record $100 million fine. The team was also disqualified from the 2007 Constructors’ Championship. The drivers, however, were permitted to retain their points.
The intra-team rivalry at McLaren between Alonso and Hamilton was a key storyline. Tensions were evident throughout the season, including a notable incident during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix where Alonso blocked Hamilton in the pit lane.
Alonso, who had joined McLaren as the reigning double world champion, left the team after just one season. The relationship with team principal Ron Dennis had deteriorated significantly over the course of the year.
There has been no official announcement from the BBC regarding the documentary’s title or a potential release date. Production appears to be in its early stages.
