The 2026 Formula 1 season’s eleventh round, the Hungarian Grand Prix, is set to commence this weekend at the Hungaroring circuit in Budapest. A significant development for Aston Martin is anticipated with the introduction of a heavily upgraded AMR26, influenced by Adrian Newey.

The team aims for a Q2 appearance, a notable step after recent performance struggles. At the Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso required an additional three seconds to advance from Q1, highlighting the performance deficit.

Adrian Newey’s involvement is expected to engineer a breakthrough for the AMR26. The upgrade package, described as a ‘B-spec’ car, is designed to provide a more competitive and stable platform for future development.

The Hungaroring’s characteristics, which prioritize chassis performance and through-corner balance, are expected to suit the upgraded Aston Martin better than the power-sensitive Spa-Francorchamps circuit, where the Honda engine’s limitations were more exposed.

Meanwhile, the weekend is also poised for a direct confrontation between Ferrari and Mercedes. Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, is considered a strong contender for a one-two finish, particularly given the Hungaroring’s layout.

Lewis Hamilton holds an unparalleled record at the Hungarian circuit, with nine pole positions and eight victories. A ninth win this weekend would equal his all-time record for wins at a single track, previously set at Silverstone in 2024.

Charles Leclerc has demonstrated resurgent form in recent races, setting the stage for an intense intra-team battle with Hamilton. The first lap will be critical for gaining clear air and pit-stop priority on a circuit where overtaking is challenging.

Mercedes has encountered reliability issues throughout the current season, which could impact their championship challenge in Budapest. Kimi Antonelli is also a factor in the ongoing F1 title race.

The Ferrari chassis is theoretically well-suited to the Hungaroring’s mix of fast and slow sections, positioning them as a strong force against Mercedes.
